The Blue Hole

Located in the Pine Barrens of Winslow, on the border of Camden and Gloucester Counties is the Blue Hole. This small but legendary pools is said to be bottomless and also a frequent stop of the Jersey Devil.

Locals warn their children to stay away from the Blue Hole and to NEVER go swimming there. There have been tales of unexplained whirlpools, which will suck down swimmers. Some victims say that they have been lucky enough to escape its clutches and they say that they felt something maybe the Jersey Devil pulling them down into the pools depths. If there is a bottom to the Blue Hole, it is said to be fine sand, which referred to as “sugar sand.”

My family and I decided to go check this hole out one summer day. As we drove to the Pine Barrens it took us a while to find which dirt road to turn down to. But we finally got to the road in the pines, which the Blue Hole is located down. As we finally approached the Blue Hole the atmosphere changed. We no longer heard any birds and it felt very eerie. It was crazy how still the surface was on the Blue Hole. The water was clear but we saw no signs of fish or water life. It was very creepy and gave me a chill.

The Blue Hole is featured in Weird NJ, which is where we found out about it. It was very interesting to be able to go there and experience this sight.
