An apple a day keeps the doctor away

Im quite sure everyone has heard the phrase "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". How many people believe this is true and why are apples the only fruit that keep you from getting sick? Just like vegetables, fruits are very good for your health and also promotes you to live a long and healthy life. Apples contain Vitamin C, the same ingredient in orange juice which is said to boost your immune system and to keep you from getting sick. Apple's also reduce tooth decay by cleaning bacteria from the teeth.

This idea of eating an apple keeps you from seeing the doctor arose during the 20th century. Quercetin, which is found in apples has been said to protect the brain cells against neuro-degenerative diseases. So, is all this true? I'd rather eat a banana or an orange and I've never really liked apples. People get sick, that is life and im somewhat sure fruit doesnt play a big part in whether you have to go see the doctor. Fruits and vegetables are good for you, but there are many other problems that could lead a person have to go see their physician. I do not totally believe this statement is true however I do believe eating a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables helps your body.

  1. I definitely agree with you. I believe eating any type of fruit/vegetable is beneficial towards our health and boosts our vitamin C levels. I don't think apples have significant differences in vitamin levels compared with other fruits. I also never would have thought that apples could reduce tooth decay - very interesting.

  2. I never knew that apples reduced tooth decay. They are my favorite fruit, and I do personally try to eat one a day. My mom used to try and make sure us kids would eat one in the morning before school. I loved them so much that I didn't seem to mind. The habit seemed to stick and I've been doing it almost every day for years now.

  3. I agree with both you and Jessica. I think that any fruit is going to give you a boost in vitamin C so of course it would be good to eat them daily for your immune system. I do not think it is just apples, I just think it was a catchy phrase someone came up with to use on their child.

  4. I have heard also that this isn't true because apples are actually one of the least healthy of the fruits as far as vitamin content goes. But eating one a day IS better than no fruit at all. Good post!
