Superstitions in Sports

If you ever watch a sports game, you might see players do certain things that might just look ordinary to our eyes. But players tend to do certain things before, during, or after the game. You will see players follow a ritual that they must follow. They believe that if they break their ritual that it is bad luck and that they will go in a funk. Baseball must be the sport that holds the most superstitious players. According to Fact monster  an example is Nomar Garciaparra is the Red Sox’s short stop who has to tug on his batting gloves and taps his toes during each bat.

There are a slew of baseball superstitions throughout the majors. Baseball players find it bad luck to touch the baselines while running off and onto the field between innings. Lending a bat to a fellow player is a serious jinx.  If a pitcher is throwing a perfect game or a no-hitter, never speak of it while it's going on. Each and every player either has their own superstitions and they all follow them. I believe that it is just silly that players do these things. I'm pretty sure that even Nomar Garciaparra's routine he does before each at bat has got him to strike out.

  1. This is a great topic, i find it fascinating that superstitions are not only done by players on the field but by the fans, as if wearing your underwear on top of your pants at home is some how going to help your team win. I had a friend who felt the need to watch every flyers game a couple of seasons ago, because when the season started the flyers were winning every game. One night we decided to go out to a club that wasn't showing the game, and they lost. He felt directly responsible for the loss. needless to say he never missed a game again, but it didn't matter because they didn't even make it. My favorite superstition has to be the not shaving your beard.

  2. This is definitely an interesting topic, especially in baseball where superstitions and strange routines are so popular. I remember while playing little league many years ago I would turn my cap inside out while in the dug -out because i believed it gave our team good luck. On a serious note, i do believe the routines people do help them relax and perform at their highest level.
