Detoxification or Body Cleansing

Detoxification is a form of alternative medicine that aims to rid the body of harmful substances, toxins, in the body that can effect short or long term health.  Some popular forms of detox are juice fasts, colon cleanses, and detox diets.  Detox's have been very popular with the media over the past could years because many people are trying to use them as a kick start to a healthy life style.  It is very odd that these cleanses are so greatly promoted because there is no scientific evidence that they actually cleanse the body or benefit people's health.  The liver is the main organ in the body's detox process, and does a great job with out any cleanses.

When it comes to colon cleanses, they seem to actually do more harm than good.  Colon cleanses usually involve enemas and laxatives, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.  Any kind of detox can cause stress on a persons body.  The body's internal organs are there to cleanse your body naturally, nothing else is needed unless someone has a serious medical condition.

I have tried two smoothie cleanses, and they really did nothing good for my body.  I had horrible headaches, was exhausted, and was very irritable while cleansing.  The cleanses I did involved drinking four different smoothies a day, no solid food.  I did not lose any weight, feel energized, or anything that was portrayed to happen by the media.  From my personal experience and the lack of scientific evidence, I feel that detoxification is pseudoscience.

    I’m glad you wrote about this subject, because it seems so much of what I have been taking at face value, has turned out to be “pseudo” or false. I searched online for more information regarding the truth, about colon cleanses, and according to the Mayo Clinic, there is no empirical evidence suggesting that colon cleansing improves health by removing toxins, boosting your energy or enhancing your immune system (Picco, 2015). In fact, it is reported that colon cleansing alters the body’s very delicate electrolyte, and osmotic balance which could lead to dehydration, kidney damage, and cardiac dysrhythmias, as well as infection, nausea, vomiting, cramping, bloating, and specifies that,” coffee enemas when used in colon cleansing have been linked to several deaths’” (Picco, 2015).

I was required to read a book titled "Ads, Fads, and Consumer Culture" by Arthur Berger for a different course this summer and it highlighted the processes and science behind today's advertising campaigns. "Cleanser" products fall into a category of advertising in which a "problem" that we were previously unaware of is created by an advertiser in order to sell the solution to the created problem. For example, I was unaware of the buildup of toxins inside of my body that can negatively impact my health, but after seeing an advertisement for the solution to that problem, I am now worried about it and am likely to purchase that product in order to prevent future health issues. In fact, I may even feel physically better after I use it as a result of a placebo effect.
    The solution to this is in Rhonda's comment above: do research and think critically and rationally before falling for a pseudoscientific claim.

  3. Like Rhonda and Ryan said: doing the research and being objective about that research is very important. Most people are biased so you're going to have to research yourself and come up with your own conclusions. Great post!

  4. I think the myth of juice cleanses have been around for decades, and I think I first heard about them in the mean girls movie. I briefly heard about the smoothie cleanses in my high school and thought about giving it a shot, but I heard of all the side effects from girls getting really sick from it at school! It really is unsafe, and you may as well just go on a regular diet if you want to lose weight without getting seriously ill.
