Detoxification is a form of alternative medicine that aims to rid the body of harmful substances, toxins, in the body that can effect short or long term health. Some popular forms of detox are juice fasts, colon cleanses, and detox diets. Detox's have been very popular with the media over the past could years because many people are trying to use them as a kick start to a healthy life style. It is very odd that these cleanses are so greatly promoted because there is no scientific evidence that they actually cleanse the body or benefit people's health. The liver is the main organ in the body's detox process, and does a great job with out any cleanses.
When it comes to colon cleanses, they seem to actually do more harm than good. Colon cleanses usually involve enemas and laxatives, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Any kind of detox can cause stress on a persons body. The body's internal organs are there to cleanse your body naturally, nothing else is needed unless someone has a serious medical condition.
I have tried two smoothie cleanses, and they really did nothing good for my body. I had horrible headaches, was exhausted, and was very irritable while cleansing. The cleanses I did involved drinking four different smoothies a day, no solid food. I did not lose any weight, feel energized, or anything that was portrayed to happen by the media. From my personal experience and the lack of scientific evidence, I feel that detoxification is pseudoscience.
