New Jersey's Pine Barrens, the legend of the Jersey Devil has haunted imaginations for over 250 years. Described as a winged, hoofed creature with the head of a horse and the cry of a tortured child. We have learned that many people have claimed to bare witness the Jersey Devil. Ever since, locals have reported unsettling encounters: strange footprints in the snow, livestock mutilations, and glimpses of a creature vanishing into the trees.
Ben Franklin was rumored to have fueled early versions of the story. There are many people that believe these sightings are false and could be sighting of just a normal animal. But there are many reports of a demonic screech heard. Light night campfire stories to pop culture references and themed festivals, the Jersey Devil remains a chilling and beloved symbol of the unknown lurking in Garden States woods.
It is extremely interesting how strong the belief in the Jersey Devil still is to this day. Even if the possibility in its existence is dubious at best, the fact that people will either cling to his existence as a means to explains what goes bump in the night that scares them, or as a means to attract tourism. The availability bias and ability for people to seek out the patterns that may or may not be there to fuel something more than likely built of the originating tales age and still carry the myth into the modern age is intruiging.
